Atmosphere and charm on the river IJssel

Take a fascinating city walk and discover more than 1,250 years of Deventer's history. Deventer is special because so much of its rich history has been preserved. A prime example of this is the medieval Bergkwartier neighbourhood. It's the old trading heart of the city where merchants once had their quarters and merchandise was traded on the town square De Brink. The entire area is one big monument. Other must-sees include the Grote Kerkhof town square with Deventer's largest monument, the St. Lebuinus Church, and the architecturally interesting Stadhuis (City Hall). The Deventer VVV tourist office offers various city walks and treasure hunts through the Hanseatic city.

River and city in harmony

Sailing Deventer - Havensloep

Deventer's location on the river IJssel doesn't just lend itself perfectly to taking long walks in the water meadows. It should come as no surprise that the IJssel is best explored from the water, and Deventer's unique location on this river offers various options for an enjoyable boat trip. Board a luxury saloon boat or smaller sloop and take in the view of Deventer and the natural banks of the IJssel from the water. You can sail upstream to the city of Zutphen or downstream towards the cities of Hattem, Zwolle or Kampen.

'Green' might not be the first word that comes to mind at a water park and artificial ice rink such as De Scheg. However, De Scheg has reduced 50% of its energy use and almost 95% of its tap water consumption over the past 10 years. At De Scheg, warm water is produced from ice and ice is made from the sun. How? Thanks to over 1,500 solar panels on the roof of the ice rink, a heat pump between the ice rink and the swimming pools, and the reuse and recovery of heat from the rinse water from the swimming pools. Now that's clever!

Discover Deventer's murals

In recent years, people that create street art such as graffiti have developed into true artists with their rollers and spray cans. Over 20 colourful murals have been created at surprising places in Deventer's city centre, various outlying districts, industrial estates and along access roads. The paintings tell stories about the city's past, present and future. A special route booklet is available through Street-art-Streets and a bilingual Deventer murals audio tour can be downloaded via izi.TRAVEL.

This includes places such as De Ossenwaard, 't Schol, Keizersrande, De Haere, Kranenkamp and Oostermaet. There are several signposted walking routes on these estates.
