Sint Stevenskerkhof Nijmegen

Nijmegen's beautiful old Lower Town (benedenstad) has a long, rich history. It's a city best explored on foot during a city walking tour or simply strolling through the city centre and the various charming neighbourhoods. The old town exudes a young and friendly atmosphere, with an exuberance that is typical of the south. Nijmegen is also home to many beautiful sights that tell the story of the oldest city of the Netherlands. Take a leisurely walk through Kronenburgpark in the city centre, score some treasures in the oldest shopping street of the Netherlands, or take a stroll on the newly renovated Waalkade quay. Visit St. Stephen's Church (consecrated in 1273!) and the Mariënburg Chapel and be amazed by the beautiful architecture.

At the beginning of the Common Era, Nijmegen was already an important base of operations for the Roman army due to its favourable location on the river Waal. Around AD 100, the Romans had founded a complete city, called Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum, and Nijmegen was granted city and market rights by Emperor Trajan. But the Romans were not the only ones to leave their mark on the city. Come and discover the history of 'Nimma' for yourself.

You know what's also great about Nijmegen? It is a city that is very suitable for students, making it ideal for younger explorers. There's a good reason why the European Commission's EDEN Network and the renowned publishers Forbes and Condé Nast Traveler named Nijmegen as one of the 10 best European destinations in 2022. This beautiful city on the river Waal has also been recognised as the best European destination for young people. Selection is based on cultural and tourism offerings, quality of life and sustainable development.

The perfect combination of city and nature

Nijmegen is known for its abundance of nature in and around the city. In 2018, the city on the river Waal was named the European Green Capital, a title worn with pride. There is therefore plenty to enjoy in this green city. Discover Nijmegen's greenest, most beautiful spots during a walking tour of the city centre or explore Nijmegen's charming, diverse neighbourhoods. The entire old town exudes a young, friendly atmosphere and an exuberance that is typical of the south.

The beautiful nature around the city lends itself perfectly to walking and cycling. Bordering the city is the Ooijpolder nature reserve, so you can walk from the Waalkade, via the Ooypoort pedestrian bridge, straight into the water meadows. This place is the perfect combination of city and nature. Its breathtaking landscape changes from merrily waving white plumes of cotton grass in summer to purple heather glowing in the sunlight later in the season. And if you are looking for mighty oaks, grazing Highland cattle and phenomenal views, then don't forget to visit the heathlands of the Mookerheide.

Flood protection

Across from the Waalkade, you will find the river park of Nijmegen. This park was created because the rivers have to handle an increasing amount of water, which is why they decided to dig a side channel (the Spiegelwaal) next to the river Waal. This intervention, in combination with the dike relocation, created an elongated island in the Waal. It is this island and the Spiegelwaal which help protect Nijmegen from high water and flooding. The river park offers visitors a unique mix of water, nature, recreation and urban activities. Besides hiking and cycling, you can enjoy plenty of swimming and various water sports here in summer.

Industrial hotspot

Rex door Vasim

The NYMA site has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when the ancient city of Ulpia Noviomagus was located nearby. During World War II, the site played a strategic role in the US operation 'The Crossing' and was crucial to the success of Operation Market Garden. In the industrial era, the NYMA artificial silk spinning mill (later CP Kelco) and the Vasim factory were established here. The latter remains an icon of the industrial atmosphere that characterises the site.

With a rich history and a promising future, NYMA has now opened its doors to visitors and entrepreneurs, and it is a true hotspot for creativity. Visitors to the NYMA site can check out their website for information on the entrepreneurs present, a calendar of activities, events and workshops, and a map that will help them discover this fascinating area for themselves.

Wander through atmospheric alleyways

In addition to the industrial atmosphere of NYMA, Nijmegen also has a charming network of atmospheric alleyways and lanes. All ideal for exploring on foot. For those looking for a hidden gem, Van Welderenstraat comes highly recommended. It's a street brimming with trendy eateries and speciality shops. The Marikenstraat, with its modern architecture, offers an interesting contrast.
