Van Gogh Drenthe Cycling itinerary: Cycling Route of the Year 2024 - Aug. 8, 2024

During the inaugural day of the Fiets en Wandelbeurs (Bike and Hike Fair) in Utrecht, the 'Van Gogh Drenthe Fietsroutes' was announced as the Cycling Route of the Year 2024 by the jury. They expressed pleasant surprise at the exceptional quality of this cycling route in the Netherlands.  

The jury provided insights into the impression made by the winning route:

The 'Van Gogh Drenthe Fietsroutes' span 150 kilometers and offer a captivating journey through the picturesque landscape that once inspired Vincent van Gogh during his three-month stay in Drenthe. Cyclists traverse through playful fields adorned with quaint old villages, forests, and marshy peatlands, where nature is allowed to thrive. The route is brought to life with informative panels and an engaging route booklet filled with stories about Vincent and the era in which he lived.

An abundance of cycling paths 

What sets this route apart is its remarkable diversity and abundance of cycling paths, ensuring a captivating experience throughout. Cyclists will enjoy a segment along the canal between Hoogeveen and Nieuw-Amsterdam, reminiscent of Vincent's travels on a towboat. However, the scenery swiftly transitions as cyclists immerse themselves in the surrounding forest. In addition to the Van Gogh landmarks, the route boasts numerous attractions such as the nodding donkeys of Schoonebeek and the Veenloopcentrum Weiteveen. Along the way, cyclists will also encounter ample opportunities for dining. A notable highlight is the recently reopened Van Gogh Huis Drenthe, where visitors can explore Vincent's studio.  

The recognition of the 'Van Gogh Drenthe Fietsroutes' as the Cycling Route of the Year 2024 celebrates not only the beauty of Drenthe's landscape but also its rich cultural heritage tied to Vincent van Gogh.
