Our planet's boundaries

The Netherlands province of Friesland is known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning nature and   impressive water management. The province is also leading the charge in a movement that’s reshaping how we think about waste, resources, and sustainability. Enter Circulair Friesland —an initiative that’s turning the idea of a circular economy into a living reality.

Nick Boersma, a Friesland native, has been with the association for 3 years. The inception of Circulair Friesland was started in 2015 when a group of forward-thinking companies realized the urgent need for a more sustainable approach to business. These companies, driven by the belief that Friesland could set itself apart through circular economy practices, came together to form this association. Fast forward to today, and Circulair Friesland exemplifies a remarkable unity among over 170 members—including businesses, government bodies, educational institutions, and non-profits—working together toward a common goal.

So, what exactly is a circular economy? Nick describes it like this, “For us, a circular economy means living within the planet’s limits. It is about reducing the use of raw materials. Circular economy aims to avoid depleting valuable natural resources by maintaining and adding value over time. It encompasses not just materials but also energy, water, biodiversity, and social inclusion. It is about preserving value and innovating with new solutions through modern regulations.”

“A circular economy is something we need to shape together. Collaboration is essential and Friesland is a region where we know how to work together. With its village-like spirit, the region is action-oriented, starting projects independently and effortlessly connecting when needed, reflecting its strong culture of teamwork.”

Agriculture and construction go hand in hand

One of the standout areas for Circulair Friesland is construction. Nick and his team are working on projects that include everything from renovating social housing to developing new, sustainable construction practices. “I'm especially excited about the shift from concrete and plastics to bio-based materials. In three years, our members have cultivated 600 hectares of hemp, set up processing facilities, and integrated the hemp fibers into local construction materials like insulation panels. This approach supports both sustainable agriculture and construction. While initially bio-based products may cost more, in the long run they benefit the entire region and provide a unique closed-loop model.”

Friesland's combination of practicality and sustainability makes it an attractive location for forward-thinking conferences and meetings. “Our focus on circular economy principles not only enhances the attendee experience but also aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly practices.” Friesland is not just a destination but a living example of how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into event planning. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate real-world applications of circular economy solutions while benefiting from the region's innovative approaches and scenic beauty.

The most circular European region in 2025

Friesland excels in water technology, sustainable agriculture, and circularity, earning international recognition for its innovations. Looking to the future, Circulair Friesland aims to continue expanding its impact. “Our goal is to become the most circular region in Europe by 2025.” The plan is to scale successful initiatives, work closely with other regions, and continue to innovate.

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we will be launching a Jubilee Year: The Year of the Circular Economy in Friesland. Throughout 2025, the province will showcase local innovations and advancements in circularity while providing a preview of future developments. ‘We look forward to sharing our expertise, fostering collaboration, and exchanging knowledge on a global platform.”
